Press Release
Jackson, MI October 23, 2020: Jackson Downtown Partners are pleased to announce the “Crowning Achievement” of their next-generation Commercial Mixed-Use Residential Building in the first-of-its kind Jackson Smart Energy District. Consumers Energy will be topping the four-story complex with a Solar Array that will support THE 200’s innovative energy management technology platform, part of Consumers Energy’s commitment to earn Jackson a preeminent position on the national map for energy leadership. THE 200 incorporated innovations throughout the complex in Downtown Jackson to serve as a showcase for solutions that will assist Consumers Energy in the realization of its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
On October 28, (in a sight not often seen in Downtown Jackson), streets will be closed, and a huge crane will lift a large solar array to be placed on the Roof of THE 200. “Consumers Energy is thrilled to help bring the sustainable, renewable energy vision of our Smart Energy District to life with the example THE 200 is setting,” said Patti Poppe, president and CEO of Consumers Energy. “We expect this project and many more will help our Smart Energy District provide the gold standard for the Midwest and the energy industry.”
Media and Press are invited to join Community Leaders on Thursday, October 29th, 200 at 10:30am (EDT) to christen the Solar Array Panels being ceremoniously  launched to the roof of THE 200.
THE 200 was designed and built, utilizing the expertise of Consumers Energy strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings for the building and each Apartment Resident, CO2 emissions reduction, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their consequences of their impacts.  The LEED framework served as the blueprint for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. THE 200 embraced LEED principles which are categorized in five basic areas: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.
THE 200 building developers and Consumers Energy have worked together since the building’s design stage to integrate the latest in clean energy solutions, including a rooftop solar array, energy storage, electric vehicle chargers, smart thermostats and smart water heater devices. Simultaneously orchestrating these solutions at THE 200 building to optimize the building’s overall demand will help Consumers Energy study how to maximize benefits to residents and the entire grid and provide enhanced resiliency.
Consumers Energy’s leadership is exhibited as illustrated in the encouragement of their hometown to become the clean energy capital of the country. Jackson was honored for the third time in three years for its work to reduce energy waste as measured by the ENERGY STAR® Certified Program. This year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that in 2019 Jackson was the Number One most ENERGY STAR-Certified Small City in the nation.
