Lomar is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Machine Builder II to join our Custom Machine Assembly team. This is our senior, hands-on assembly role, responsible for executing complex builds with precision and quality. You will take full ownership of intricate mechanical assemblies from start to finish—reading and interpreting engineering drawings, selecting and operating the right tools, fitting precision components, and verifying assemblies meet specifications. The Machine Builder II works closely with engineers and fellow builders on demanding projects and serves as a mentor to less experienced team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the full assembly process for complex custom machines—from component prep and layout through final fit-up, testing, and sign-off
  • Read, interpret, and build from engineering blueprints, assembly drawings, GD&T callouts, and technical specifications
  • Select and operate hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, depth mics, dial indicators) to achieve tight tolerances
  • Set up and operate tool room machine tools including mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, and band saws as needed
  • Inspect and test completed assemblies and systems; identify discrepancies, troubleshoot root causes, and make necessary adjustments
  • Collaborate with engineers and the Assembly Supervisor to resolve technical issues and optimize build sequences
  • Apply understanding of fabrication and finishing processes (including welding and paint prep) to support complete machine builds
  • Operate forklifts and other industrial equipment to safely handle and position heavy components and assemblies
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and adhere to all safety protocols
  • Travel to customer sites as needed to support machine installation, startup, and commissioning
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced build technicians on the team

Essential Functions:

  • Exhibit a team-oriented mindset and commitment to quality craftsmanship
  • Manage multiple complex builds simultaneously
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with engineers and team members
  • Maintain organization and documentation of assemblies and processes
  • Support company operations with reliable, precise execution

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in mechanical, machining, or manufacturing disciplines preferred
  • Significant hands-on experience as a Machine Builder, Mechanical Technician, or comparable role in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong ability to read and work independently from blueprints, assembly drawings, and engineering specifications
  • Skilled use of precision measurement tools: micrometer, caliper, depth mic, dial indicator
  • Working knowledge of tool room machine tools: mill, lathe, surface grinder, drill press, band saw
  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems, components, fits, and tolerances
  • Experience with fabrication processes; welding experience is a plus
  • Forklift operation experience
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and quality-driven mindset
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to work overtime when production demands it
  • Basic computer proficiency

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels
  • Required PPE includes safety glasses and OSHA-approved footwear; hearing protection as needed
  • Manual dexterity and ability to perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift
  • Physical stamina required for extended periods standing and handling components
